The Upheaval - Erica Stevens: A Book Review

The Survivor Chronicles book 1

This book is very full on. There's a lot happening and the reader is thrown from one character to the next, whilst also 'witnessing' a lot of character deaths.

So many post-apocalyptic books focus on one major 'event' and a small number of main characters that mostly stick through the book 'til its end - but not this one. Many characters that have the 'permanent' vibe are suddenly plunged to their death with next to no warning, which is much more realistic, as in such a world crisis event, thousands of people would die within the first 48 hours and the death toll would continue to rise for some time as the world is plunged into further chaos as a result.

For me personally, I found it a bit difficult to keep track of. I was getting characters all mixed up and thinking 'hang on, didn't he/she die a few chapters ago?' and I'd have to go back and check. In all fairness though, I was in astronomical amounts of pain at the time, which drastically inhibits my ability to follow complex plot lines. I still very much enjoyed it and have the sequel on my wish list.

I listened to this on Audiobook, but it is also available in kindle and paperback versions and as a box set. At the moment it is in the Kindle Unlimited program, so if you're a member, you could read it for free.
