Hell Divers - Nicholas Sansbury Smith: A Book Review

Hell Divers Series: Book One
This book is brilliantly done. It's so full of action you literally feel out of breath in parts. Every character is relatable to some extent and easy to empathise with. I honestly don't think there was a single character I didn't like, even the 'villains' of the story are acting in the best interest of the 'hive' (or so they wholeheartedly believe).
Every character has the mindset of sacrificing one for the good of the many and all seem ready to lay down their life for others to some extent, regardless of age, gender or hierarchy. It made for a unique take on humanities evolvement in the aftermath of WWIII. The only likeness I can think of is The 100 (books by Kass Morgan, not the TV series), yet even that is not as in depth as this one.
And don't get me started on the ending... OMG! I couldn't wait to get the sequel and finish jotting down my quick review so I could see what happens next. Talk about a cliff hanger! I am intrigued to see where this story goes from here and whether the momentum continues. The main thing I find odd is that the main character X is already the oldest and longest surviving Hell Diver, which already sets him as a short-term character, at least, he should be, but I don't think the story will hold up without him. This makes for quite a dilemma, because no matter how the story progresses, it risks entering into the shadow of unbelievability. I'm interested to see how the Smith tackles this as the story continues.
Post Apocalyptic thrillers can be a bit like Romance - the basic characters are similar and the plot follows a similar timeline - not this one. This is by far one of the best post apocalyptic books I've come across. A definite recommendation, especially to the preppers, conspiracy theorists and any fellow lover of post apocalyptic thrillers.
A solid 5-Stars
