Strange monsters populate our landscape - gigantic wheeled machines that scoop out hillsides, flatten earth for road-beds, lift containers, and compact tons of refuse. Man has had to create these monsters to perform the enormous tasks that must be done every day in our modern civilisation. More products than ever before have to be made and transported, more roads built, and more buildings constructed for our crowded world. With his photographs, text and captions, George Ancona describes each monster's functions, special features and amazing strength. The result is a dramatic view of some of man's most startling creations.

George Ancona says that creating Monsters on Wheels satisfied the curiosity he has always felt while watching an excavation or construction job. It was also a chance to spend many hours talking to the men who operate these fascinating machines. A film-maker and photographer, Mr Ancona has made films for the American television programme, Sesame Street. Monsters on Wheels is the first book he has written as well ass photographed. He lives with his family in Stony Point, New York.
