The Marriage - K. L. Slater: A Book Review

A Controversial psychological thriller

Definitely not what I had expected. In all honesty I really just found this book weird. There's really no other way to describe it. This so-called marriage between Bridget and her son's killer is wrong on so many levels. The entire way through the book I couldn't help but think... what if the genders were reversed and it was a father marrying the young woman who killed his child? It's not the age difference that's the problem exactly, the problem for me is that Bridget changed his nappy when he was an infant. At what point does your brain change from older care-giver to equal lover?

Such a controversial topic is bound to have people reeling - and usually I'm the one with the 'it's just a story' mentality, but this time for some reason, I couldn't get past the 'ew' factor and the 'this is so gross and wrong and this should be criminal' thought mentality, which actually surprised me to be honest, as I am usually so open minded when it comes to such topics and I'm a proud 'I stand with the banned' reader.

As usual though, Slater's story-telling is top notch. It would have been an easy 5-star smasher is I was just able to get past the paedophile vibes. Despite my discomfort with this book, I am still an unwavering fan of Slater's work and I'll just hide this one at the back of the bookshelf.
