Old Screw - David 'Emu' Farrell: A Book Review

A Captivating Autobiography

I've actually been sitting on this one for ages, thinking I wouldn't like it, but I was wrong. The writing style is smooth, easy to follow and makes for a nice reading experience - other than the poor editing. There were a LOT of grammatical errors, so much so, I was tempted to only give it three stars, as it was really off putting.

The stories and experiences of this prison officer are at times terrifying and at others quite comical. It reminds me of sitting around the dinner table listening to my dad's stories of working the drill rigs, as that's how the book reads, as though you're just listening to a yarn around a camp fire - each chapter with a whole new tale. It would be a great 'Dad' book, as they're the sort of tales I think most blokes would be able to relate to to some extent.

I'd be interested in reading more from Farrell due to his style alone. I do feel that it takes a unique character to be a prison guard that not many people could handle, especially over such a long career with so many changes over the years.

I award this book four stars. It would have been a five star piece if the editing hadn't let it down.
